Academician Mikhail Alexeyevich Lavrentyev
(1900-1980)
An outstanding scientist of our time,
one of the main organizers and the
first Chairman of the
Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences
(in his time Siberian Division of the USSR Academy of Sciences) from 1957 to 1975,
Hero of Socialist Labour, Lenin
and USSR State Prizes Winner,
holder of Lomonosov Gold Medal,
member of several foreign Academies, honorable citizen of Novosibirsk.

Academician Mikhail Alexeyevich Lavrentyev, the founder
and first Chairman of the Siberian Division of the USSR
Academy of Sciences, was not only
the prominent scientist of world fame,
but also the outstanding organizer of
science, teacher and educator of youth.
The best results have been obtained
by him in mathematics and mechanics,
much has been done for development of
Soviet aircraft industry. He was the
founder of the school of practical usage
of explosion in national economy, he
was the first organiser of development
of the first Soviet computers. He took an
active part in organisation of Moscow
Physico-technical Institute - the institute of a new type. But the main thing
in his life was creation of the new science centre in the East of our country.
This idea suggested by him together
with academicians S.L.Sobolev and
S.A.Khristianovich has been supported
by scientists and the government of
the country.
