This city is one of the largest cities of Russia. Its area is 500 sq.km, the population nearest 1,5 min. It is the greatest industrial and scientific centre in the east of Russia. The most developed industries are mechanical engineering, metal processing, radioelectronics, optical, chemical, consumer goods and food industries.
The climate of the Novosibirsk Region (the area equals 178 thousand sq.km, and the population 2789 thousand people) is favourable for agriculture; it gives one fifth of wheat and one quarter of all meat and milk produced in West Siberia.
Novosibirsk is the largest centre of academic science
in the Asian part of Russia. The city accommodates a
significant part of the scientific potential of the Siberian
Branches of the three Russian Academies.
