	AWARDING OF THE PRIZES OF RF GOVERNMENT On March 11, “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” has published the Resolution of the RF Government of February 29, 2000 No. 175 “On the awards of the 1999 Prize of the Government of Russian Federation in Science and Technology with Conferring of the Title of the Laureate of the Prize of the Government of Russian Federation in Science and Technology”.
	AWARDS OF THE PRESIDIUM SB RAS
	LEADER OF THE SIBERIAN SCIENTIFIC SCHOOL OF THE ELECTRICAL EXPLORATION March 20, 2000, marks 50-th anniversary of Doctor Sc. (Technology) Mikhail Ivanovich Epov, Deputy Research Director of the Institute of Geophysics of SB RAS, Head of the Laboratory of the Electromagnetic Fields.
	THE FOUNDATION CHOSES FLEXIBLE POLICY Recently, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research which has been created in 1992 according to the Decree of the President of RF is paying serious attention to the regional problems. To increase the operational efficiency of the decisions of organizational problems, six regional offices has been established with the conventional names: Northwest, Siberia with Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Ural, Far East, Karelia, North Caucasus. About 5 years ago, such office has been organized by the initiative of the Academicians V. Koptyug and V. Fortov in the frames of the agreement with SB RAS. Financial support of RFBR provided for the research and development in SB RAS has given many scientists the opportunity to realize the projects with the use of modern equipment and new technologies.
	LOOKING FORWARD FOR THE COOPERATION Long standing relations of partnership and mutual support based on the understanding of the role of science in the society exist between the city administration of Novosibirsk and Siberian Branch of RAS. Mayor is a regular visitor to Akademgorodok, to the Institutes, University, and the Presidium of SB RAS. This was during the term of the former Mayor Viktor Tolokonsky, and this tradition is maintained by the acting Mayor Vladimir Gorodetsky who was a first deputy Mayor for a long time. During his term, he visited Presidium, SPSTL, ITAP and other Institutes.

	CONTACTS BETWEEN TOMSK CITY ADMINISTRATION AND SCIENCE Recently, two documents were signed in the Tomsk city administration: the cooperation agreement with the Tomsk State University and the arrangement on the fundamental principles of the interaction between Tomsk city administration and Tomsk Scientific Center of SB RAS.
	THE INSTRUMENTS WHICH ARE HOT ON THE TRAIL... The Institute of Design and Technology of Geophysical and Ecological Instrument-Making of the UIGGM SB RAS is preparing to celebrate its tenth anniversary.
	SILVER OF THE OPEN SYSTEM This year, the Institute of Computational Modelling of SB RAS (Krasnoyarsk) has celebrated 25-th anniversary of its foundation. During the scientific session devoted to the “silver” date, the researchers have characterized the Institute as an “open system” which is always ready for the improvement, search and development. This, perhaps, is the most typical for the nature and spirit of the collective.
	CINR IN THE ACADEMIC EXPERIMENT Chita Institute of Natural Resources (CINR) together with the Baikal Institute of the Use of Natural Resources belongs to Baikal United Institute of the Use of Natural Resources. The collective is managed by General Directorate headed by Doctor Sc. (Geography) A. Tulokhonov, Director of the Baikal Institute of the Use of Natural Resources. Creation of BUIUNR is an original academic experiment of unification of two closely working collectives located in different cities. The head of CINR, Doctor Sc. (Geology and Mineralogy) A. Ptitsyn describes the results of the experiment.
	CULTURE AND INTELLIGENTSIA OF SIBERIAN PROVINCE IN XX CENTURY: THEORY, HISTORY, PRACTICE Regional Scientific conference “Culture and Intelligentsia of Siberian Province in XX Century: Theory, History, Practice” supported by the Open Society Institute was held on February 24 – 25, 2000, in the Institute of History, Philology and Philosophy of SB RAS (Novosibirsk). The participants also celebrated 75-th anniversary of the well-known historian of the Siberian culture, Doctor Sc. (History), Professor V. Soskin.
	TO THE LIBRARY FOR INSPIRATION The Library of Akademgorodok (this is the custom name given by readers to the 2-nd branch of the Centralized Library System, municipal cultural establishment of Irkutsk) has met year 2000 in full beauty after the long expected repair. It is now clean, warm, light and comfortable in our small library.

	PATRIARCHY OF THE OIL GEOLOGY One year has passed since the decease of 88 years old Academician Andrei Alekseevich Trofimuk after the serious and prolonged illness on March 24, 1999. He was an outstanding scientist, the oldest oil geologist of Russia, one of the discoverers of the Volga-Ural, West Siberian and East Siberian oil and gas producing provinces, one of the founders of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences, organizer and permanent director of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of SB AS USSR during 30 years, Hero of Socialist Labour, twice Laureate of the USSR State Prize, Laureate of the Russia State Prize, Honorary Citizen of Novosibirsk.

	SHORT AND BRIGHT LIFE... On March 8, 2000, after painful and prolonged illness untimely deceased Candidate Sc. (Geology and Mineralogy) Aleksandr Matveevich Cherezov who was well-known specialist in the field of regional and branch metallogeny, geology of gold and polymetallic ores in Altai and Sayan plicate region, Head of the Laboratory of Magmatism and Ore Formation of the Tuva Institute of Complex Developing of the Natural Resources of SB RAS.
	LONG-AWAITED VICTORY VIII Winter Sports Day of Novosibirsk took place in the athletic facilities of the Soviet district in the end-February. This popular competitions has become a good tradition of our city that allow the sport amateurs to participate in fair competition and to show the force and endurance, adroitness and training, capability to conquer difficulties and to win.
	THE PRIZE “VIRAZH” – MOUNTAIN SKI On the eve of Pancake week, the regional mountain ski competition for the prizes of “Virazh” company were held in Novosibrsk, in Gorskaya street where the company has built first-class mountain ski complex.
	TENNIS: WOMEN TOURNAMENT Tennis Club of the Akademgorodok has made a nice present to Novosibirsk women tennis players on the eve of 8 March International Holiday. During two days 28 players have competed for the championship in traditional holiday tennis tournament in the tennis-courts of the House of Scientists of NSC and University Sports Complex. The participants include the SB RAS collaborators, Tennis Club members, tennis players from Agricultural Academy, Kalinin and Kirov districts of Novosibirsk.
