	ON THE COOPERATION BETWEEN THE SB RAS AND MINATOM OF THE RF In February, 2000, the Minister of atomic energy of the RF E.Adamov and the Chairman of the Siberian Branch, Academician N.Dobretsov have signed joint resolution on the development of the scientific and technological cooperation of SB RAS and Minatom of the RF approving the program of the cooperation of the Institutes of SB RAS and the enterprises and organizations of Minatom of RF until 2005.

	GEOMETRY AND APPLICATIONS The International Conference “Geometry and Applications” dedicated to 70-th anniversary of Professor Viktor Andreevich Toponogov is organized by S.L. Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Novosibirsk State University on March 13 – 16.
	FOLLOWING THE TRACKS OF HISTORY Doctor Sc. (History) Ilya Kuznetsov is 75. He is well-known in Siberia as a researcher of the Great Patriotic War period.
	VIEW FROM SPACE On March 3, the National Institute of Press has held the press- conference “Space Monitoring in Siberia: New Center of the Information and Space Technologies”. The senior staff of the institutions directly responsible for the problems of air and space control and the representatives of the Association “Siberian Agreement” have answered the questions of the Novosibirsk journalists.
	NEW STAGE OF EXPLORATION OF THE WEST SIBERIA The new information level of the design of modern models of tectonic structure of the secondary and neozoic platform sediments of West Siberia and the analysis of the history of geological and tectonic development of the region are the main challenge for the specialists of the Lab of Tectonic of the Platform Regions and the Lab of Mathematical Modelling of the Natural Oil and Gas Systems.
	COMPUTER MODELS IN MINING The dissertation “Development of Computer Models for the Investigation of the Technological Systems and the Processes of Mining in Stationary Network of Mine Workings” (speciality: SApplication of the Computer Technology, Mathematical Modelling and Mathematical Methods in Scientific Investigations”) presented for the competition for the degree of Doctor Sc. has been defended in the end of the last year at the Institute of Coal and Coal Chemistry of SB RAS.
	SILICON COMES AFTER SILICON These are the words of Academician K. Valiev. That was his response to the question: “What do you think about the prospects of the development of micro- and nanoelectronics? What will come after silicon? Gallium arsenide, fullerenes, diamond?” (“Perst”, 1999, v. 6, no. 3). The Second All-Russia Conference on the Science of Materials and Physico-Chemical Principles of the Production Technology of Doped Silicon Crystals (“Silicon-2000”) was held on February 9 – 11, 2000 in the Moscow State Institute of Steel and Alloys (Technical University).
	TRANSFORMATIONS DURING THE EXPLOSION Combined efforts of the ISSC&M, INP and IG&L allowed to develop the unique method of the investigations of the structure of explosives during the explosion using synchrotron radiation (SR).

	AVDENTURES OF THE ACCELERATOR Recently, during his contracted job in Thailand one of the Akademgorodok residents has been invited to visit new Center for Radiation Technologies built by Japanese in the jungle. Both production facilities and the residential part were of surprising super modern beauty. The owners claim they already has covered their expenses. But the main shock experienced by the Siberian man was when he asked for permission to see the heart of the complex, the industrial accelerator. The former associate of INP, he immediately recognized the machine, because he has participated in the process of its production. It was so offending that here, in the thickets of not very developed country, the Siberian accelerator is making currency for “Asian Dragons”... And what about here? In modern Russia, the new technologies developed by INP are of low demand.
	MEETING OF THE PETER ACADEMY Two days meeting of the Novosibirsk Branch of the Peter Academy of Sciences and Arts was held in the Institute of Mathematics of SB RAS.
	RING OF SEMINARS XI Seminar “Dynamics of Polyphasic Media” devoted to the problems of physico-mathematical modelling of the heterogeneous reactive and non-reactive media was held in the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of SB RAS with the financial support of RFBR. The founder of this seminar was Academician N. Yanenko who during his life has created the ring of seven scientific seminars. Two of them are organized under the leadership of Corresponding Member V. Fomin. In particular, the conference on solving the problems of elasticity and plasticity was held last summer. The seminar “Dynamics of Polyphasic Media” is already active for more than 30 years.
	5 YEARS OF THE PUBLIC ORGANIZATION OF THE WOMEN-SCIENTISTS The regional scientific and practical conference “Integration of the Science and Education is the Fundamental of Economics and Stability of the Society in XXI Century” devoted to the 5-th anniversary of League of Women-Scientists of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) was held on March 3 in Yakutsk.
	DISCUSSION OF THE ACTUAL PROBLEMS Five-day VI International Scientific and Technological Conference of students, post-graduates, and young scientists “Modern Techniques and Technologies” was held at the Tomsk Technical University.
	CRITERION – “SUPER PEER REVIEW” Three years ago “Springer” Publishing House (Germany) has started to publish the new journal “Materials Research Innovations” (Editor-in-Chief is well-known expert in the field of material science, one of the founders of the Materials Research Society (USA), Professor Rastum Roy, University of Pennsylvania, USA), which provides the super fast publication of full-format papers (without any page restrictions) on various aspects of the material research.
	“TWO THOUSAND YEARS WAY OF THE CHRISTIANITY” Festive scientific meeting “Two Thousand Way of the Christianity” was held on Thursday, March 2, 2000 in Grand Physical Auditorium of the Novosibirsk State University. The meeting was organized and held by the Society of Russian Orthodox Culture of NSU which starting from 1993 organizes seminars, parties, exhibitions, lectures devoted to the important milestones, remarkable events and the names of the national history and culture.

	ECOLOGY AS AN ELEMENT OF CULTURE Two workshops for the educators “Application of the Interactive methods in the Ecological Education” were held in February in the Novosibirsk resort “Lazurnyi”. The workshops were organized by the Interregional Public Ecological Foundation ISAR-Siberia, and supported by the Institute of Sustainable Communities and United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
	NEW SCIENTIFIC TREND The monograph of the authors collective comprised of research associates of the Institute of Water and Ecological Problems of the Far East Branch of RAS (Khabarovsk) entitled “Theoretical Principles of the Biogeochemical Examination” (Khabarovsk; Vladivostok: Dal’nauka, 1998) is first monograph study of this kind in the world and national literature.
	ABOUT THE RESERVED SITES The book by V. Lyamkin and L. Sokolova “Cadastre of the Specially Protected Territories and the Monuments of the Nature of the Irkutsk Region” is published in Irkutsk.
	KRIALL – ALL FOR THE GOOD CROPS Nearly 10 years ago, two research associates, Candidates Sc. – one in Mathematics, and another in Geochemistry (Experimental Mineralogy) – Lidiya Mikhailovna and Vladimir Stepanovich Krivoputskiye have started the development of new technology of the production of fertilizers on the base of peat. The results were successful, the technology operates, the fertilizers were approved and demonstrated the efficiency and entered the market. Today, Lidiya Mikhailovna is our guest.
	SPRING AT THE POND SHORE The river Ob’, Ob’ reservoir, lakes, and other ponds occupy the great part of the territory of our region and serve as the water source for the residents of the region, flora and fauna. Unfortunately, the man is not always concerned about the preservation of the purity of the ponds and their inhabitants.

	TRADITIONAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT Tennis Club of the Novosibirsk Akademgorodok in cooperation with the Sport Department of the House of Scientists of NSC in the end- February has organized the traditional men tournament dedicated to the Day of the Defender of the Motherland. More than 20 tennis players have participated in the tournament, employees of SB RAS, NSU students, high school students.
