	PROBLEMS OF SIBERIAN AIC DISCUSSED The Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences and the Siberian Branch of Russian Agricultural Academy of Sciences have held (at the SB RAAS facilities) the joint meeting of their Presiduims with the agenda “On the research and development within the Branches towards the solution of the problems of agricultural and industrial complex of Siberia”.

	SCIENCE EVENTS IN FEBRUARY
	THE HUMANIZATION OF THE SOCIETY IS A COMMON PROBLEM Interregional Scientific and Practical Conference “Humanities in Siberia. Problems and Prospects” is organized by the Novosibirsk State University and “Open Society Institute” (Soros Foundation), January 28 – 29, 2000.
	A QUARTER OF RUSSIAN POPULATION EITHER TEACH OR STUDY On January 14 – 15, All-Russian Conference of the educational staff of all levels: pre-school, secondary school, specialized secondary school, higher education was held in Moscow, in State Kremlin Palace. We have asked Nikolai Sergeevich DIKANSKY, the Chancellor of the Novosibirsk State University, who participated in the Conference to share his impressions.
	NEW ENGINEERS FOR NEW RUSSIA The Congress of the Russian Association for Technological Education was held in Moscow, in the Hall of the Board of the Ministry of Education of RF. More than 100 members of the Association—representatives of technical universities, Ministry of Education of RF, research institutions, R&D companies, managers of the departmental agencies—have attended the Congress.
	SCIENTIFIC ASSEMBLAGE—2000 Every month our newspaper presents the list of scientific events of the Siberian Branch for the current period. Now we would like to present the overview of the annual plan with explicitly stated activities of each institution.
	TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF TECHNOLOGY It is very difficult to put all results obtained by the group of co-authors from several institutions of SB RAS in the framework of the Integration Programme “Studies of the Solid Non-Equilibrium Products of the Mechanochemical Transformations and the Creation of New Materials and Technologies” into one short newspaper note. I will try to mention only major ones, the most relevant from the point of view of the project coordinator.
	GEOLOGY AND GEOCHEMISTRY OF THE SIBERIAN ENVIRONMENT Integration project “Geology and Geochemistry of the Siberian Environment” has been implemented by the United Institute of Geology, Geophysics, and Mineralogy and the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry as well as the Irkutsk Institutes of Geochemistry and Chemistry.
	Anniversary of Yu.A. Voronin January 29 marks 75-th anniversary of Doctor Sc. (Physics & Mathematics), Head of Laboratory of the Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics, Professor of the NSU Yuri Aleksandrovich Voronin, the outstanding personality, well-known both in and outside the Akademgorodok of Novosibirsk.
	FORTUNATE GEOLOGICAL PATH More than 50 years ago Valery Vasil’evich Zolotukhin, the geologist who is well-known not only on our country, has made his first step on the geological path. He has made hundreds kilometers in his expeditions afoot, got a lot of interesting scientific findings and discoveries. On January 28, Doctor Sc. (Geology & Mineralogy), State Prize Laureate, Professor V. Zolotukhin will celebrate his 70-th anniversary. Lets note some major important events of his life.
	VACANCIES
	“We need to have 30 – 50 percent of the annual industrial growth” The results of the 9-th Scientific and Practical Conference “The Problems of the Business Crisis Management” organized last year by the International Managers Club on the facilities of JSC “ElSib” were included in the booklet together with the address of Novosibirsk Mayor V. TOLOKONSKY who after the elections in January, 2000 has become the Governor of Novosibirsk region. His view of the economy development capabilities could be of certain interest.

	DISCOVERY TIMED TO THE OPENING DAY OF THE TOMSK TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY Pleasant, or as one might say, sensational news has come on the eve of the hundredth anniversary of the opening of the Tomsk Technical University. For the first time in its history, one of the physical phenomena found by the scientists of the University was officially recognized as a discovery. The certificate issued in confirmations of the fact bears the names of A. Vorob’ev, A. Chepikov, and G. Vorob’ev. Vasiliy Yakovlevich Ushakov, Pro-Rector of TTU for the research sector, explains the importance of the discovery and the practical implementations of the technologies developed on its basis.
	QUANTIFYING RUSSIAN SCIENCE I am reluctant to repeat the notorious clichй about the ruin of the Russian science, its lagging behind the pace of the world science. There is no background underlying this point. The lack of the facts... However, recently, with great pleasure I have read the results of extremely interesting research by Yelena Mirskaya, Doctor Sc. (Sociology), the Head of the Department of Sociology of Science of the Institute of the History of Natural Science and Technology, devoted to the situation in the Russian science from the point of view of the sociologist.
	UNDESIRABLE PROSPECTS The relations between Russian Federation and Georgia that have been significantly aggravated lately due to the war in Chechnya, more and more resemble the “cold war” times. Numerous incidents in the Chechen section of the Russian – Georgian border have provoked the mutual accusations – Russia blames Georgia for open and hidden support for Chechen militia, and Tbilisi accuses Moscow of the attempts to engage the republic in the conflict in Northern Caucasus.

Gene scientists Ronald Crystal of the Cornell University Health Center in collaboration with his colleagues has experimented with mice and found the way to revive the hair cavities, follicles, using one of the genes.
