	THE DAY OF KNOWLEDGE WITH ACADEMICIAN M.I.EPOV September, 1 at the State Broadcasting Company "Novosibirsk" a press conference of the SB RAS Vice-president, Director of the Trofiomuk Institute of Petroleum- Gas Geology and Geophysics of the SB RAS Academician Michail Ivanovich Epov devoted to the Day of Knowledge has taken place.
	"ALL SCIENTISTS SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE…" Last week of August, Russian, American and French researchers have gathered atthe Novosibirsk Academgorodok for the next Lavrentiev readings on mathematics, mechanics and physics organized by the Lavrentiev Institute of Hydrodynamics.

	THE FIRST ECOLOGICAL SCHOOL WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF SOC From July, 5 to July, 25 the first summer school of the National Academy of the Shanghai Organization for Cooperation (SОС) for young scientists "Studies on steppe ecosystems" took place. The Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of sciences was an organizer of the event.
	YOUNG HISTORIANS ARE INTERESTED IN THE RECENT PAST OF OUR COUNTRY Last days of August a 4th Regional youth scientific conference "Historical researches in Siberia: problems and prospects" took place at the Institute of History of the SB RAS.
	BAIKAL IN RELIABLE HANDS From August, 16 to18 at the Limnological Institute of the SB RAS a complex examination has been held whose results will be reported in December at the Presidium of the RAS.
	THE DAY OF WELL-KNOWN LAKE The second Sunday of September is the Day of Baikal.
	COAL: PROFIT OR SAFETY? The question is not idle. It is even possible that this question already contains answers clear for everybody, too. Nevertheless coal is needed, more and more coal is extracted, the volumes will grow. Profit is needed, too. But at what the cost is all this? And what should be done?
	KUZBASS IS GRATEFUL FOR EFFICIENT INITIATIVES
	CREATION OF JOINT PROGRAM IS PLANNED On August, 24 near the negotiating table at the Exhibition Center of the SB RAS the representatives of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Railway Transport (Moscow) have gathered for the discussion on the prospects of cooperation.
	IT IS DIFFICULT BOTH TO TEACH AND TO LEARN Russia as an advanced post of culture is degrading. It is sad, but hardly irreversible in case of no losing hart. The main reserve of the future is new generations. The main resource of a person is knowledge and skill. Therefore the hopes for overcoming the crisis and renewal of Russia could be realized only through the perfection of science and education.
	PATHWAYS WE CHOOSE On August, 23 at the House of Scientists a solemn closing of the Summer Physical and Mathematical school took place devoted this year to the 110th anniversary from the birthday of Academician M.A.Lavrentiev.

	LIGHT OF THE VICTORY Creativity of scientists.
	"PORTRAIT OF A PAINTER" WAS FOUND? Being interested in the creativity of the artist, portraitist A.G.Varnek, sometimes I look through the portraits made by him on the Internet. Of a special interest is the revealing of such works by the portraitist those either are absent in the list of his works at all, or whose location was considered earlier to be unknown.
	THE AMBER WAKENING IMAGINATION In the beginning of August at the House of Scientists of the SB RAS a unique exhibition titled "Prehistoric insects within amber" has been opened. Exhibits have been given for display by a private collector.
	TOURNAMENT FOR N.N.OZEROV PRIZES The second tennis tournament for N.N.Ozerov prizes, held from August, 14 to15 at the courts of the NSU, has been devoted to the All-Russian Day of Athlete.
