	THE TIME TO PAY RESPECTS June 9 the solemn meeting of the SB RAS Presidium, Administration of the Novosibirsk Region, Novosibirsk City Administration, scientific community and Higher Education institutes dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Academician V.A.Koptiug has been held at the House of Scientists of the Novosibirsk Scientific Center.

	CRUCIAL YEARS: TO WITHSTAND AND TO WIN For years of work in the rank of the SB RAS Chairman Valentin Afanasievich Koptiug regularly appeared on the "SiS" pages with target settings for vital problems of science and society, reflections and conclusions, his vision of the solutions of these problems and withdrawal from complicated situations. We represent fragments of some his appearances published in different years. Most of them have not lost urgency today too.

	SIBERIAN SCIENCE BEING A CONQUERING HERO Newspapers of Republic Buryatia have called the first exhibition of developments of the SB RAS scientists held in the end of May at Ulan-Ude a bright event in the life of Transbaikalia.
	SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION IN BRIEF REPORT STYLE About business trip of the SB RAS Chairman Academician N.Dobretsov and Head of the SB RAS Scientific Research Organization Office V.Ermikov to the countries of the European Community: Germany, Belgium and France (April, 2001).
	CAN SIBERIAN SCIENCE STRENGTHEN POWER OF JAPAN? June 4 the Novosibirsk Academgorodok hospitably accepted representative delegation of the Association of Economic Organizations of Japan (Keidanren), the scientific and technical group.
	SINCERE DELIGHT OF VISITORS At the meeting with the Japanese delegation at the Institute Cytology and Genetics of the SB RAS there was a talk not only about molecular biology and transgenic plants and animals, but also about cloning of long ago extinct mammoths.
	VISITING CHEMISTS A part of Japanese delegation has visited the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the SB RAS. This institute is well known by its long-standing contacts with Japan. Moreover, "the Japanese House", representative office of the Center for studies on North-East Asia (Tohoku University) has settled down at the Institute.

	ABOUT NEW BOOK BY ALTAY HISTORIANS The history of one`s own city cannot keep real patriots of "a small motherland" indifferent. There is a book "The Barnaul City Duma. 1877-1996. Collection of Documents" before our eyes. Altay historians and archivists under scientific edition by Professor of the Altai State University V.A.Skubnevski have published it. Despite of the obviously increased interest to the history of Siberian municipal organs, it is the first documentary edition in our region for the present.
	TOWARDS ORIGINS OF HUMAN CULTURE From May 28 to May 30 at the Novosibirsk State University and the State Public Scientific and Technical Library the International Scientific Conference devoted to 35th anniversary of archeographic work at the NSU and the Siberian Branch of the RAS and dated by the Day of Slavic Literature has been held. The conference was directional on elucidation of the results of archeographic researches of Siberia as well as of other areas and regions of Russia.
	THE LESSONS OF THE PAST FOR NEW GENERATION Already half a year the humanitarian project "The lessons of the past for new generation" realized by the Faculty of Philology and Journalism of the Irkutsk State University, Irkutsk Public Foundation "Press and Society" under support of the "Open Society" Institute, is acting at Irkutsk. This project is based on the studies on development of public consciousness, rights of the person, freedom and publicity at the Irkutsk Region in 1980ths. It was nonordinary time, when political life in our country sometimes made sharp spurts forwards, sometimes zigzags depending on what the leader became a next general secretary.
	HAPPY LIFE There is no, probably, a person in the Novosibirsk Academgorodok who does not know Vladimir Aleksandrovich Sazonov, Head of ophthalmologic ward of the First Polyclinic of Central Clinical Hospital. It is already almost forty years as he stands sentinel.
	REFORM OF SCHOOL EDUCATION ABROAD Debates on educational reform are conducted in many countries today. Partly the measures offered coincide with those discussed in Russia partly they differ from. There is a judgment that the schoolchildren of Japan are the most loaded and hardworking since their programs are the largest, home tasks are voluminous, and vacation are the smallest.
	SMALL ORCHESTRA OF LARGE HOPE Children`s wind band of the Musical school N 10 of the Novosibirsk Academgorodok has returned from Krasnoyarsk, where it has took part in the International Festival Competition "Hope-2001".
	IN MEMORY OF SCIENTIST May 29 one of the leading geomechanicians of Russia, chief scientific researcher of the Institute of Mining of the Siberian Branch of the RAS, Doctor Sc. (Engineering), Professor Oleg Ignatievich Chernov has left this world at the 73rd year of his life.
