	"VECTOR" SCIENTIFIC CENTRE IS 25! 25 years ago, the State Scientific Centre for Virology and Biotechnology "Vector" was founded. This anniversary has been marked by the International Seminar "Evaluation of Sponsored Biological Investigations in Russia in the Next Millennium". The seminar took place in the House of Scientists of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences on September 2 to 4.

	THE WORLD LEVEL OF SIBERIAN MOLECULAR VIROLOGY The State Scientific Centre for Virology and Biotechnology "Vector" was founded in 1974 as the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Molecular Biology. The article tells about the history and achievements of the institution.
	IT`S LIKE A DIAMOND The twenty-tears-long history of the Designing and Technological Institute of Monocrystals of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is depicted. After a critical period in the early 1990s, the institute began developing new trends of investigation. The military subjects had dropped away, while the problems of worldwide interest had gained the lead. The institute works "from an idea to its result", i. e. fundamental studies are connected with applications, the world achievements are entranced into practice rapidly, and it takes not a long time to embody a new concept. Crystals grown in the Institute are used in the production of lasers. Artificial crystals of emerald, alexandrite, spinel for jewellery were highly appreciated also. However, the latter field of action cost one of the researchers his life four years ago.
	THE GREAT MEETING OF MATHEMATICIANS From August 25 to 28, the International Conference "Mathematics and Its Applications" was held in the Novosibirsk Academic Township. The conference was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Academician Serghei K. Godunov. He is one of the creators of the theory of numerical methods in hydrodynamics and of the modern theory of conservation laws. His most outstanding achievement is a finite difference scheme known as the "Godunov method". S.K.Godunov was awarded with the Lenin Prize (1959), the A.N.Krylov Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R.(1972), the M.A.Lavrentyev Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1993). He is also Doctor honoris causa of the Michigan University.
	IN THE MIRROR OF NUMBERS AND EQUATIONS The description of new results in the field of two-component media dynamics is combined with the meditation on the relationship between pure and applied science as well as with the author`s view on problems of contemporary scientists` life and work.
	THE `HIGHWAYSCIENTISTS` Academician E. Kruglyakov in his voluminous article meticulously strips a group of swindlers of their guise. The mountebanks pretend to invent a `microlepton radiation` with fantastic properties and try to get money from taxpayers. They want an approval from state institutions and run post-graduate training in such specialities as "Astrology", "UFOlogy" "Telepathy and telekinesis", and even "All branches of industry" and "All domains of human activities". Some documents of their self-appointed academy were got by fraud. Now the quacks are lobbying for a law on `psychosphere defence` at the State Duma (parliament).
	NEW ITEMS FROM THE "NAUCHNAYA KNIGA" PUBLISHING HOUSE IN NOVOSIBIRSK Three books in mathematics issued by the publishing house in August are annotated. Two of the books belong to the "Siberian School of Algebra and Logic" series; the third one, to the "University Series" These series are briefly characterised too.


	TECHNOLOGIES OF STEADY DEVELOPMENT: HISTORY AND PROSPECT A seminar for schoolchildren and students was held at the "Lazurny" sanatorium.
	A WAY TO THE WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE On the First of September, the Knowledge Day, lessons begin. 17000 pupils is the total number of Novosibirsk children who went to school this year for the first time.
	A PLACE WHERE FOWL BUILD THEIR NESTS, WHERE FISH SPAWN The expedition base of the Institute of Taxonomy and Ecology of Animals of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is situated on the banks of Chany Lake. The interesting results on population dynamics of birds, distribution of helminths, and spawning zones of fish are presented in a popular form. The article is illustrated with a mass of photos.
