NEXT SESSION OF THE PRESIDIUM OF THE SIBERIAN BRANCH OF THE RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
 
A session of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been set for September 2. Its agenda includes presentation of honorary diplomas on the occasion of the 275th anniversary of the Russian Academy of sciences, a scientific report by Corresponding Member of the RAS V.Shaidurov on geo-informational technologies, an information about the session of the "Siberian Agreement" inter-regional association held in Tomsk on August 13, and other items.
 
AGREEMENT ABOUT CO-OPERATION IN THE FIELD OF FORMATION AND REALISATION OF SCIENTIFIC
 
Technological and Innovation Policies, Training of Highly Skilled Specialists between the Ministry of Science and Technologies of Russian Federation, the Ministry of General and Professional Education of Russian Federation, the Inter-Regional Association for Economic Interaction ("Siberian Agreement"), and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

ACADEMICIAN A.I.MALTSEV MEMORIAL CONFERENCE
 
A conference on mathematical logic had been held at the Institute of mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Academician A. I. Maltsev, one of the creators of modern mathematical logic and universal algebra, the head of the Siberian scientific school of algebra and logic. 70 mathematicians from Russia, the U. S. A., United Kingdom, Germany, Kazakhstan and other countries took part in the conference.
 
A MAN OF BAIKAL
 
On September 3, Prof. Arnold Tulokhonov, General Director of the Baikal United Institute of Exploiting Natural Resources, celebrates his 50rh anniversary. He is a specialist in geomorphology and palaeogeography, Doctor of Geography.
 
BROWNIAN MOTION IN MIGRATION PROCESSES
 
Prof. Svenlana V.Soboleva told in the interview on the occasion of her anniversary about the enhancement of migration from Siberian cities to villages and migration processes in general.
 
 
THE STRENGTH OF "SIBERIA" WILL BE ENHANCED BY OMSK
 
Director of the Institute of Sensor Microelectronics of the Omsk Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Prof. Valery Bolotov comments the visit to Omsk of the delegation from the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
 
KNOWLEDGE FOR COMBAT
 
The 5th International conference "Modern Methods of Mathematical Modelling of Natural and Man- made Catastrophes" was held in Krasnoyarsk on August 17 to 20. The conference had been organised by the Institute of Computing Technologies (Novosibirsk) and the Institute of Computing Modelling (Krasnoyarsk) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and worked under the supervision of Academician Yu.I.Shokin. The financial support had been received from the Russian Foundation for Fundamental Research. The subject matter of the conference covers such problems as: Computer modelling of extra-ordinary situations and the system for the maintenance of making decisions; The development of mathematical instruments for application to the problems of modelling natural and man-made catastrophes; Modelling of extra-ordinary situations in water systems; Prediction of the risk, monitoring of extra-ordinary situations, problems of industrial security. In addition to scientists, the specialists from the Ministry for Civil Defence and Extra-ordinary Situations took part in the conference.
 
ON THE EVE OF THE TWENTY FIRST CENTURY
 
On September 21 to 24, a scientific and practical conference is planned to be held in Novosibirsk. The subject matter of the conference will be "Novosibirsk on the eve of the twenty first century: Prospects of development and investment opportunities". An exhibition "Investment Potentials of Novosibirsk on the Eve of the Twenty First Century" will be opened simultaneously.
 
THE ACADEMY AND THE BOMB
 
On August 29, 1949, the first Soviet A-bomb was tested. An historical review of creating the bomb is presented on this occasion.

A new territory of the Novosibirsk Zoo gave shelter to the number of species. Animals live in the open air now. The director of the Zoo Mr. Shilo tells about the problems and prospects of his furred, fluffy and feathery juniors.
