	NEWS
	ANNIVERSARY SESSION OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES The Anniversary Session of General Meeting of the Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences dedicated to the 100th anniversary of outstanding scientist, mathematician of our time, brilliant organizer of science, Academician Michail Alekseevich Lavrentiev has been held in Kiev. From 1939 to 1949 M.A.Lavrentiev worked within the framework of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences, he had been elected the director of the Institute of Mathematics, the Vice-President of the Academy.
	THE GREAT ENTHUSIAST The name of Academician of Michail Alekseevich Lavrentiev, outstanding mathematician and mechanician, organizer of science and of youth education, is widely known both in our country and abroad.
	M.A.LAVRENTIEV AND INFORMATION-CALCULATING TECHNOLOGIES The time of the creation of the Siberian Branch has coincided with a period of fast penetration of electronic computers into science. They generated new science such as computing mathematics and new universal technology of scientific researches such as mathematical modeling of real processes and phenomena relating the fields of different sciences and disciplines.
	THE ACADEMICIAN AT THE UNIT Participation of Academician M.A.Lavrentiev in the activities of the "Design Office-11" ("KB-11") is an interesting and cognitive page both in his personal biography and in the history of the first Russian Federal Center, "VNIIEF". According to the documents, Michail Alekseevich worked on nuclear defense subjects from May 1953 to May 1955 directly at the Unit (it was the informal name of KB-11), and a year more up to the end of May 1956, pluralistically, being in Moscow.

	"WE HAVE GONE THROUGH OUR OWN UNBEATEN TRACK" The anniversary has been an occasion for this interview: the well-known all over the world scientist, member of the Presidium of the SB RAS, director of the Institute of Strength Physics and Material Science of the SB RAS Academician Victor Evgenievich Panin has been 70.
	THE TOPS ARE SUBJECT TO STRONG PEOPLE Chief scientific researcher of the Institute of Geography of the SB RAS, Doctor Sc. (Geography) Irina Leonidovna Savelieva has been 70.
	FOR THE RUSSIAN GOVERNMENT PRIZE The work "Development and application of a set of measures for rock bump prevention in ore mines of Russia" has been submitted for the Russian Federation Government Prize of 2000 in the field of science and engineering.
	INTER-REGIONAL INTEGRATION November 2 at the Small hall of the House of Scientists the conference " Inter- regional Integration and Development of Federal Districts: the Forms and Mechanisms of Regulation " has been held.
	THE RUSSIAN AND CHINESE COLLEAGUES MEETING October 27 at the Tomsk State University the 5th International Russian and Chinese Symposium "Laser Physics and Laser Technologies" that had begun October 23, has been completed.
	AT THE PRESIDIUM OF THE SB RAS November 9 the SB RAS Presidium Meeting began from a pleasant ceremony of handing of "Siberian Fair" medals to the Institutes of the SB RAS.
	HETEROJUNCTIONS OF ZHORES ALFEROV The works of the Nobel Prize-winner 2000 Zh.Alferov, undoubtedly, not only have opened a recent trend in physics of semiconductors, such as physics of heterojunctions, not only have embodied scientific elaborations into numerous devices, but also induced development of adjacent fields of science and engineering.
	ACADEMIC REFORM OR PATH OF DESTRUCTION This year October 18 in the "IN-Science" subject appendix to the "Independent Newspaper" (N 9) an article "Academic reform is unavoidable" has been published. The writer disguising under an alias Ivan Petrov, heads a laboratory in one of the Academic institutes of arts field. The harsh form of the publication and causticity of the problems under consideration have drawn a lot of responses. "SiS" is publishing a response by Academician N.Dobretsov, addressed by him also to the editorial board of the "Independent Newspaper".
	"MECHANICS" IS LIVING! About opening of a new hypersonic tube that is unique in the world by its parameters, at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, "SiS" has already written more than once. The installation was created at hard times for science and in many respects its appearance is obliged to the efforts of Director of the Institute, Corresponding Member of the RAS V.Fomin. This result has become possible due to enthusiasm of the head of the research sector Candidate Sc. (Engineering) V.Zvegintsev, scientific researchers V.Chirkashenko, V.Shishov, V.Novikov, leading engineer V.Nazarov and others.
	THE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY WILL BE DEFINED BY YOUTH October 28, 2000 the Fifth International Ecological Conference was held at the Novosibirsk State University.
	THE "PLANET" PROJECT Within three days of November, from November 15 to November 18 within the framework of the World-wide Project "Planet" the global polling of mankind will be held in more than 125 countries of a world. The inhabitants of New York and New Guinea natives, Siberians and inhabitants of the African deserts will state their opinions on a set of topical problems simultaneously.

	ABOUT BOOK FAIR IN FRANKFURT The past Frankfurt book fair, October 18 - October 23, 2000, once again has demonstrated the tendency that intensively develops last years: Frankfurt is not only the main place of meetings of the publishers and booksellers, but also one of the leading places for world cultural exchange.

	BALL ABOVE A NET This year from October 28 to October 29 the 5th Interurban Tournament on volleyball "Academiade-2000" among the veterans of middle and high age dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Academician M.A.Lavrentiev has been held at the Novosibirsk Academgorodok in four sporting halls.
